A New View for Orientations!
UBCevents will be undergoing a temporary transformation for Orientations coming this August!
UBC Orientations is for EVERYONE. We at Student Development are currently working on this collaborative project with UBC IT and Public Affairs. There will be a new look, a new feel, and lots of new features to ensure that all your wants and needs for Orientations will be met. We will be blogging regularly to keep you updated on what’s going on behind the scenes with the Orientations view of UBCevents.
Here is what we have so far:
Below is the Home Page to which all new-to-UBC students will be directed. The left side focuses on UBCevents and the right side on Orientations. The user would then self-identify as one of the following options: First Year, Transfer, Returning, Graduate, or Faculty & Staff.
Upon selecting a category, the user will then be directed to a more personalized page. Shown below is an example of a personalized page for a First Year Science student.
Some features include:
- MUG Leader personalization
- a map with a pinpointed location
- Flickr photos from UBC Orientations 2009
- A personalized schedule according to MUG group
- Faculty/Departmental Events
- Campus-Wide events
What else would you like to see on the Orientations view? Please let us know!

UBC EVENTS AT UBC THEATRE’S Problem Child and The End of Civilization
Although I am an avid theatre enthusiast, never has a modern production resonated with me, as did yesterday’s performance of Problem Child and The End of Civilization by George F. Walker. The two one act plays directed by Chris Robson are set in the same dingy motel room, which instantly places the audience in line [...]
UBC Events at UBC Opera’s Rusalka
The Little Mermaid has always resonated with me. It might be because it’s more than a tragic tale about the plight of a young woman in love. It’s a story about boundaries—a story about overcoming limits and growing up, realizing responsibilities and understanding the inconsistency of love. Heading into the show, I did not know [...]
UBC Events Interviews Sam Sullivan
Sam Sullivan, former Mayor of Vancouver, was a Featured Presenter at the 2012 UBC Student Leadership Conference. Lee caught up with him after this presentation to ask a few questions. Since Sam Sullivan broke his neck in a skiing accident and became a quadriplegic at age 19 he has had to breakthrough limitations to achieve [...]

What a great idea! The only thing I might want if I was a first year student would be an email address for my MUG leader.
Hi Stephen,
Thank you for your response! First year students are now in contact with their MUG Leaders before Imagine Day via email. If you have any other suggestions, please feel free to continue commenting.
Sincerely,
Pam

I love that you are incorporating MUG Leader information. I’m assuming students need to login with their CWL to access that info, but I don’t see it reflected on the proposed wire frames.
Another thing that would be useful to students is a print-out version of the schedule to use during Imagine.
Lastly, have you done compatibility testing on the new site to make sure it’s accessible via iPhone and iPad?
Hi Katie,
Thank you for your comments! No, it is not necessary for students to log-in with their CWLs. By selecting the First Year category on the home page, students will be directed to pick their MUG group name in order to access a personalized Imagine Day schedule.
As for printable schedules, PDF versions will be available. The UBCevents team is also working on a smartphone view of the schedules, which would cater to iPhones and iPads. This version cannot be guaranteed for Imagine Day 2010, but we will definitely be testing compatibility whether or not the smartphone view is available.

UBC HR is excited that there’s room for a faculty/staff orientation section! Thanks for working with us to make the orientation this fall more inclusive of those new faculty and staff who will be joining the UBC community!
One thing that I strongly recommend for one’s orientation is a section on the acronyms used here at the University. It is extremely difficult and a little daunting to remember all of them when you are first to arrive here. ie. CFIS, SCARF, SUB
Great suggestion! Thanks Patty! We will definitely keep that in mind.

Everything looks so great but I wonder when this site will be available. Can’t wait to check it out!
Sounds cool! I’m a first year student starting this fall and was wondering about these MUG leaders? You said that we should already be in contact with them? I’ve yet to receive an email.
Hi Jamie,
The site will be available in mid-August.

What is a MUG leader/ MUG? I am a rising freshman and have no idea what that is.
Hi Bird,
Here are some definitions from the New to UBC Orientations Glossary page:
MUG
An abbreviation of “My Undergraduate Group.” A MUG consists of one MUG Leader and approximately ten first-year students in the same faculty.
MUG Leader
A senior UBC student who guides a group of first-year students (a “My Undergraduate Group” or MUG) on Imagine Day. They also maintain contact with these students throughout the school year.
Thank you for your question!
