Whether a student is taking a course in medieval studies or bioengineering, sustainability can be part of their academic experience at UBC. UBC is transforming education by implementing and incorporating sustainability into the curriculum. How are UBC instructors integrating sustainability into their courses? What do students think about sustainability education at UBC?

Join students, staff and faculty on May 26th at 12:45 p.m. at UBC’s Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability to hear their experiences and perspectives on sustainability education at UBC. “We are inviting the community to learn and ask questions about UBC’s plans, initiatives and experiences on sustainability education”, says Kshamta Hunter, Sustainability Student Advisor and panel moderator.

The panel features Jean Marcus, Associate Director of the Teaching and Learning Office UBC Sustainability Initiative (USI), Anneliese Schultz, Instructor, Green Italian, Faculty of Arts, Justin Ritchie, Graduate Student, Materials Engineering and AMS Sustainability Co-ordinator, and Rosalind Sadowski, Undergraduate Student, Faculty of Land and Food System, president of Oxfam UBC and a member of Common Energy student group.

Sustainability and student learning are key UBC commitments. The USI Teaching and Learning Office educates the next generation of sustainability leaders by transforming and coordinating undergraduate and graduate sustainability education at UBC. “We have initiated several programs to support UBC’s commitment—the Fellowship program aims to transform the curriculum by catalyzing the creation of new ‘sustainability learning pathways,’ the Spotlight program supports educators to infuse sustainability into existing courses, and several new student engagement and leadership programs strive to enhance student involvement in sustainability” says Marcus.

The panel discussion will be held on May 26th from 12:45-1:45 in the Modern Green Development Auditorium at the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (2260 West Mall, UBC Vancouver Campus). Email Kshamta Hunter for more information. Visit UBC’s Alumni Weekend for a full schedule of events.
