Welcome to UBC! Orientations 2011 is Sep. 6th, it's your one day introduction to everything UBC. Your MUG Group is:
I’m studying Sciences and I love it! I lived in Place Vanier last year and it couldn’t have been a better first year. I love UBC for its nice days, which are so beautiful. Be ready to enjoy the breezy weather and the first snowfall. As well, there is always something going on either on residence or all the other events UBC has to offer. When you have time to explore, some attractions to check out include Stanley Park and Granville Island.
Your MUG Leader,
Eva Siu

What do we do if we have classes on that day? I have a 400 level class during the meet up time and I guess that won’t be cancelled correct? I’m still registered as a first year though and I’ve never been around the campus. Do I just meet up later?
Hi Lawrence,
If you are an undergraduate, your classes have been replaced with orientation. The exact policy is:
Undergraduate classes offered by the following faculties – with the exception of classes that start at or after 5:00 pm and meet only once per week – are replaced by Imagine UBC:
Faculty of Applied Science – Bachelor of Applied Science
Faculty of Arts – all undergraduate programs except the Bachelor of Social Work
Faculty of Commerce & Business Administration – Bachelor of Commerce
Faculty of Dentistry – Bachelor of Dental Science in Dental Hygiene
Faculty of Education – Bachelor of Human Kinetics
Faculty of Forestry – all undergraduate programs
Faculty of Land & Food Systems – all undergraduate programs
Faculty of Science – all undergraduate programs
Hope that helps,
Orientations Team
I have already registered for GALA. Do I have to attend all the events? Or I can leave whenever I want?
Hi Quianhui,
GALA and Imagine are very different in terms of events and offerings. I would strongly suggest attending Imagine as we have planned a whole host of awesome things for you!
Hi, I’m a little confused
So, do classes start on the 7th? Where are we supposed to go (ie. our Wednesday classes)? Also, I never got a phone call from my leader/group?
Divya
Hi Divya, classes do start on Wednesday. However, be sure to check your email because some courses can be canceled (especially tutorials and such) in the first week.
Hi Divya! Sorry, I had tried to call you a couple of times but never had anyone pick up. You should have gotten an e-mail from me though. Unless you have a class that starts after 5pm on Imagine Day, you don’t have class on the 6th. Regular classes will resume on the 7th, so bring along your class schedule on Imagine day and I’ll help point out where you need to be and when on Wednesday. C:
Are we supposed to wear red on imagine day?
If you are an engineer be sure to wear red!
As time is approaching for school I am getting more confused. I wanted to ask:
Are all our classes cancelled on Sept 6?
Is attending the orientation mandatory? (because I am unable to make it, I might be a little late)
What type of clubs can first year students join?
Hi Amandep,
Check out my answer to the other post about class cancellation. Attending orientation is mandatory, but if you’ll be late make sure you tell your MUG Leader. First years can join any club they want to! There are over 300 clubs at UBC so there is definitely something for everyone. If you want a more detailed description of clubs, check out the AMS Insider (that’s the free planner you get).
I wanna join at imagine day but I havent get any email about my goroup!(LFS)
I afraid of miss that:(
Hi Mahsa,
You should be receiving an email shortly. Please email me at info.events@ubc.ca in case you do not receive anything.
I see all the people wearing purple shirts, “I AM UBC”.Does it mean we get each one of them at the beginning of the event or should we just wear our own?
Those shirts are unfortunately only for MUG Leaders. If you’re a muggie, you’ll have to bring your own shirt. If you do want an awesome “I am UBC” shirt I’d highly suggest applying to be a MUG leader next year.
Do we have to wear red?
If you are in the engineering faculty, I would highly suggest trying to wear some red. Otherwise, take a look at what faculty you are and wear the corresponding color. Music students, make sure you wear yellow.
However, if you’re like me and don’t have any red shirts, don’t worry too much about it!
During the main event, are we allowed to leave from the MUG? Or do we have to stay for the entire duration of the event?
Hi Carol,
I’d suggest sticking with your leader for the beginning part and then after they have shown you everything, you’ll be free to wander around.
Hi, my friends have been telling me that they’ve received phone calls from their mug leaders. Am i suppose to receive a phone call as well? I havent yet received one! =(
-Eleanore
Hi Eleanore,
Most first years will get a call from their MUG Leader, however, some leaders are away and may not give you a call. Don’t worry too much if you haven’t received anything. Either they will call you or you will meet them on Tuesday! Hope that helps!
I AM FIRST YEAR OF SAUDER STUDENT. IM LITTLE BIT CONFURSED. IS THERE ANY CERTAIN COLOR OF TSHIRT THAT I NEED TO WEAR? AND ARE WE MEETING AT 8PM?
Hi Chloe,
Wow! Judging from your all capitals question, you are either super nervous or really excited (or maybe both)! I’ll try to answer your questions:
Color of shirt: GREY
Meeting time: 8:00am (different faculties will have different times)
Hi. I just got my email for my mug group and I noticed in the link it says /1yr/ and I am a transfer student. Will this be a problem?
Hi Rob,
I’ve emailed you to see what we can do. For now, attend that group meet up.
Thanks!
HI, I was wondering when the activities of the Imagine day will be over? I will be commuting to UBC and I wanted to know what time we will be done, so I can plan my return trip
Hi Shuchita,
You should be done at around 5:00pm. There are other activities at night (see above for a list of activities that week) which will start later that you can also attend but that are not mandatory.
Thanks!
Where can we find out if specific classes are cancelled on the day of the orientation?
Hi there,
Take a look at the exact policy. If you still have questions, email me at info.events@ubc.ca
Undergraduate classes offered by the following faculties – with the exception of classes that start at or after 5:00 pm and meet only once per week – are replaced by Imagine UBC:
Faculty of Applied Science – Bachelor of Applied Science

Faculty of Education – Bachelor of Human Kinetics
Faculty of Forestry – all undergraduate programs
Faculty of Land & Food Systems – all undergraduate programs
Faculty of Science – all undergraduate programs
Hope that helps!
Where do we get our free planner? I also heard that there are special ones by faculty as well, is that true?
Hi Jack,
Certain faculties will have specific free planners (I think it’s engineering, science and commerce that do) that they will be giving out during Imagine and the first week of school. You can also pick up the AMS Insider which will be given out in the SUB.
Hope that helps!
What happens if you don’t wear purple?
The world will end!
Kidding, it’s not really a big deal if you do not have a purple shirt or anything. If you can find a shirt with purple on it then that would work too.
Best,
will lunch be provided?
Lunch is provided.
Thanks!
Hi,I am just wondering should we must attend the orientation. I am tired and can only wake up at noontime or even later because of the time difference, I just came back from China, so I am not sure whether I can attend the orientation.
Hi there,
Thanks for the comment. If you can, make sure you let your leader know. If not, try to come as soon as you are up as it’s something you shouldn’t miss.
Thanks!
what colour does the faculty of land and food systems wear for imagine day?
You’ll wear black! Thanks!
Hi,
Do we have to check in with our group leader to let them know we’re here?
Hi Joseph,
Yes you do. The leaders are responsible for you the entire day so definitely let them know.
Thanks!
Can anyone bring an extra copy of the campus map? I seem to have lost mine when I first visited.
I know all my class locations, but not exactly where they are on the map
Hi Lewis,
There will be extra copies of the map!
Thanks!
Hi.
I am a first year who have not been assigned a MUG. I am wondering if I can join this group? It is probably too late to get an answer so I will turn up tomorrow regardless.
Thanks!
It is a bit late! (why are you up at 5 am???)
I would say go ahead and try to join a group. Most leaders are really nice and will let you join their group. If you run into trouble be sure to email me at info.events@ubc.ca
Thanks!
I have not received a phone call or my mug leaders email, and unfortunately I will be late, what do i do!?
Hi there,
Don’t worry too much since they will be waiting for you a little over the meeting time. If you’re still not there, you can try to contact your leader directly or join another group. Email me at info.events@ubc.ca in case you get into trouble.
Thanks!
Hi there,
Take a look at the top right hand corner where the schedule is. Applied science should meet at 8:00am.
Thanks!
